The community of Mandela Terrace is typical of any inner-city
community with a dense population and inadequate infrastructure.
There are comparably lo levels of social capital resulting
primarily from our political history and a sense of individualism
that prevails. There exist a sense of community cooperation
that was more noticeable present in the initial period of
formation of the community this, however, had gone into hibernation
to be awaken. Mandela Terrace is a generally peaceful community
which has for years escape the high levels of crime that exist
in other similar areas. Recently since the last genera election
several incidents has interrupted this trend and we see an
increase in incidents of crime. The small geographical are
covered by the community with a dense population has significantly
reduced the availability of green space or recreational areas.
About Spring Village

The community of Spring Village is a rural suburban
community of Old Harbour in St. Catherine that has a population
of approximately 5000 residents, over 65% of the constituents
live in single-parent homes and 70% of the residents are unemployed
and 80% self identify as “very poor.” Females
head the majority of households, most of whom receive little
or no financial support from the fathers of their children.
The communities themselves have identified the following specific
needs and constraints: very high unemployment, lack of skills,
training and opportunities, poor provision of formal primary
education and high school drop out rate, poor parenting, insalubrious
physical environment, inadequate housing and sanitation, low
self-esteem, increasing drug use among youth, increase incidents
of HIV, increasing rate of crime and violence, and high rates
of teenage pregnancies.
3Cs is the only youth-focused
NGO that provides activities for youth, as well as the only
organization that leads HIV/AIDS prevention and life skills
programs for both youth and parents in our target communities.
Presently 3Cs partners with several other groups within the
community of Spring Village. These include the Spring Village
Development Foundation, and the spring Village Sports Committee.
The programs designed and implemented by 3Cs fall directly in
line with the priorities of the community. Many of the priority
issues raised by residents are directly addressed by the life
skills programmes led by 3Cs: low self esteem, high teenage
pregnancy, poor parenting skills, lack of unity, and peer pressure.
Without the youth and family programmes led by 3Cs, youth in
the Spring Village community would be left with little or no
support.
